Inside the joystick housing, gears made of Stanyl allow accurate encoding of how much the driver turns the joystick handle. This is then transmitted to extra-strong gears made of Stanyl that turn the car's steering shaft and thus the car itself. Stanyl has high fatigue resistance, mechanical stiffness and strength which is required for these gears. A key feature of the Joysteer design is the positive feedback given to the driver, allowing the same sort of driving feel as when a normal steering wheel is used.
